Flash Idea

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 11, 2008, 3:21 PM
So we started talking about magnetic fields in depth today i have plans to do something Flash related with it. Something with particles and fields coming in out of the page. Ill try and work on it this Sunday. If anyone wants to build on this i give the math. I also want to try and make something like my electric field program [link] but with magnets of various shapes.

I am also making a master list of minerals for a competition coming up. Its incredibly intricate with all sorts of properties. Ill post it in my scraps when I'm done if anyone wants it.

Science Competition

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 28, 2008, 8:24 PM
Yet another science competition this last weekend
My team one first in the competition and we are going on to nationals.
The format is that the judge asks a question and the two competing teams buzz in if they know the answer.
So its mostly knowledge and a little speed.
the day was a lot of fun but the most fun was the question in the final round:
"What type of lens is use correct nearsightedness?"

so everyone sat there for a sec and then i realized that I'm nearsighted. so i took my glasses off and looked at them. The crowd realized what i was doing and burst out laughing along with the judge. I put them back on and buzzed in and said "concave". All these questions are supposed to be answered by prior knowledge but is not like the judges are going to deny me my glasses.

oh and magnetite (Fe3O4) isn't a silicate which contains Si and O in different combinations.

after completely draining our mental energy some of us went to play laser tag by the time we went the normal rules didn't apply body checking, and dirty trick were fair game.

i bet you weekend can't compete.

Merry (Fill in holiday of choice)

Father Christmas: An Engineer's Perspective

There are approximately 2 billion children in the world. Since Santa does not visit Muslim, Hindu, Jewish or Buddhist children, this reduces the workload to 15 per cent of the total, or 378 million. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that comes to 108 million homes.

Thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, Santa has about 31 hours to work with. This works out to 967.7 visits per second and a total trip of 75.5 million miles. So Santa's sleigh has to move at 650 miles per second.

Assuming that each child gets only a medium-sized Lego set (2lb), the sleigh is carrying more than 500,000 tons. A reindeer can pull no more than 300lb. Even if the "flying" reindeer could pull ten times that, Santa would need 360,000 of them. This increases the payload another 54,000 tons.

600,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance. The lead pair of reindeer would absorb 14.3 quintillion joules of energy per second each; they would burst into flames almost instantaneously, creating deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team would be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second, or about the time Santa reaches the fifth house on his trip. Not that it matters, however, since Santa would be subjected to a centrifugal force of 17,500 Gs. A 250lb Santa (which seems ludicrously light) would be pinned to the back of the sleigh by 4,315,015lb of force, instantly crushing his bones and organs.

Therefore, if Santa did exist, he's dead now
